THE WHITAKER
WELL what a summer, we couldn’t have asked for more really could we?
But as the holiday season swiftly starts to draw to a close don’t miss out on our Kids Art workshops.
Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of his death, our upcoming Ray Lowry exhibition will be the inspiration for all budding young illustrators and cartoonists out there.
We’ve got two sessions, Thursday, August 30 and Friday, August 31, 2018, from 1pm to 3pm to test your talents and get creative.
Children aged nine years and above will get the most out of it, but please if you have a child who likes to draw then don’t hesitate to book them in.
Places are limited, but you can book your ticket for £3 per child at www. thewhitaker.org and look under our What’s On pages.
The Ray Lowry exhibition will officially open on Saturday, September 1, from 2pm, and it’s an open invitation for all to attend. Ray Lowry, was one of Britain’s most famous cartoonist whose work featured in NME, Punch and the Guardian.
His upcoming exhibition, INK 2, showcases an incredible selection of his life’s work in cartoons.
Ray was a versatile cartoonist finding humour in the most odd places, divorce, offices, history, death and all demonstrating an incredible observation of contemporary culture.
This follow on exhibition on the back of Ray’s 1998 book INK, will show pieces, some previously published others rejected (cartoons lost their vogue for a while) but promises to cover a variety of Ray’s favourite subject matters in true Ray style.
As we head into September the muchloved 60s Festival makes a welcome return.
We’re kicking off the long weekend on the evening of Thursday, September 6, with a screening of ‘My Generation’ - Sir Michael Caine’s documentary about and homage to the Swinging 60s and ‘the decade that changed the world’.
Directed by David Batty and scripted by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (writers of many a classic TV series including The Likely Lads and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet).
The film is narrated by Michael Caine himself, and features archive 1960s footage not only of Caine but of many of his sixties contemporaries including Sandie Shaw, Marianne Faithfull, Sir Paul McCartney, Mary Quant, Twiggy and Roger Daltrey.
The footage is accompanied by a superb musical soundtrack featuring hits from the era by (amongst many others) The Kinks, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Book tickets now at www. thewhitaker.org, and any film lovers don’t forget there is still time to book your film club membership so you don’t miss our monthly screenings starting September 20.
The 60s festival at the Whitaker will continue with our official opening to the event on Friday, September 7, doors open from 6pm with a raucous 60s quiz starting from 7.30pm.
Those who have been to our famed quiz nights will know that our house quiz masters, Carl and Al make sure there is never a dull moment.
With live music and events throughout the weekend make sure you book this in your diary, and keep checking our website or social media for further updates.
