ROSSENDALE REVEALED
Barry Hyde, member of the Promoting Rossendale Partnership Board, looks at The World Gravy Wrestling Championships THIS year’s famous World Gravy Wrestling Championships will again be held at the Rose ‘n’ Bowl in Stacksteads on Bank holiday Monday, August 27, and will be raising funds for the East Lancashire Hospice and other charities chosen by the competitors themselves.
This is unquestionably one of the most unusual competitions held annually in the Valley. If you have never attended before, it’s wild.
It’s wacky, it’s wrestling like you’ve never seen before.
It is staged in a pool full of Lancashire gravy and contestants will wrestle in the gravy for two minutes with points scored for fancy dress, comedy content, entertainment value and wrestling ability.
All contestants get sponsorship for their chosen charity and really make a massive effort to raise as much money as they can for their charity.
In addition to the amazing wrestling action there, are lots of other activities for the whole family.
In previous years there have been cheerleading groups, BB gun shooting range, bouncy castles, face painting, craft beer stalls, cake and tombola stands. Kids also get an opportunity to experience paddling in the gravy pool.
Food and drink will be served all day and the fire brigade will be there to wash down wrestlers between bouts. It’s a brilliant day for all the family.
The activities will start at 1pm, with entry fees at £2.50 per adult and £1.50 for children, with profits going to designated charities.
The event is organised by Jon Lowe of the Rose ‘n’ Bowl and Andy Holt of Real Lancashire Black Puddings.
