MR Harry Horne died peacefully on Wednesday, October 10, at home, aged 96.

Harry was born at Lamb Bank, Water, on January 16, 1922, and was schooled in Great Harwood, Haslingden and Blackburn.

Apprentice­d as a taxi driver and undertaker to Sonny Moorhouse of Flax Moss, Haslingden, Harry learned clog and shoemaking alongside his father, Walter.

He was also an engineer at AH Lord and Rossendale Combining Company, and formemaker at Rossendale Forme and Knife. He will be remembered by most as the proprietor of H&P Horne Motorcycle­s on Bacup Road, Waterfoot, in the sixties and seventies.

Harry was an ingenious engineer and mechanical guru to a generation of Valley bikers. He rode the Wall of Death and raced sand yachts, as well as being an accomplish­ed allotment-keeper.

In later years he became a licensed radio amateur and Morse Code trainer.

Thanks to carers and friends at Haslingden Hall, Haslingden and at Ashlands Nursing Home, Newchurch.

Harry was husband to the late Phyllis, father to Keith, Jean and Leonard, grandfathe­r to Alison, Michael, Thomas, Ben, Matthew and Christophe­r and great-grandfathe­r to eight.

The funeral service will be held at 10am on Friday, October 19, at St Anne’s Church, Edgeside, followed by committal at 11.20am at Burnley Crematoriu­m. Afterwards at Sykeside Country House Hotel.

DEREK MCNAMARA

MR John Derek McNamara, of Bold Street, Accrington, passed away on Thursday, October 11, aged 88.

Derek, as he was known, started work in 1949 with Calico Printers Associatio­n in Loveclough as a laboratory technician. He went on to Manchester College of Science and Technology, where he became an associate. He later attended Burnley Technical College, where he gained the Institute of Works Managers and subsequent­ly entered into this role.

Loveclough Printworks closed in 1980 and Derek moved to Newton Bank Printworks, Cheshire that specialise­d in Batik printing.

In 1982 Derek and his late wife Mary relocated to Zaire. Following the collapse of Zaire’s economy in 1985, Derek returned home when the factory closed. He began working for a Dutch screen printing company as technical and sales executive for the UK and Ireland until his retirement at 65.

In his younger years Derek enjoyed cycling, mountainee­ring and potholing. He had a life-long passion for motorbikes and continued to ride into his mid 70s. He also enjoyed rambling and model making.

Derek and Mary enjoyed holidays in the UK and Spain having a timeshare in Marbesa on the Costa del Sol.

During later years, Derek took great comfort from attending Sunday morning Mass at St Anne’s RC Church in Accrington followed by a sherry at the Peel Park pub with Sue and her family.

He also made a lot of friends at the Friendship Club at St Anne’s Church, where he will be missed.

Derek was married to the late Mary and leaves son Mike, daughter-in-law Michelle, daughter Pam and son-in-law Tony. He was grandad of Stephen, Alex, Dan, Liam, Levi and Courtney, greatgrand­father of Ella, Hollie and Minnie, and had cousins Angela and Elaine, brother-in-law Jack, sister-in-law Edna, and many dear friends.

A funeral service will be held at 10.15am on Tuesday, October 30, at St Anne’s RC Church, Accrington, led by Fr Stamp, followed by a cremation at 11.40am at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

Family flowers only please, donations may be made to the Movember Foundation, which tackles prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

JAMES HANDLEY

MR James Richard Handley passed away on Wednesday, October 10, aged 79.

James was a builder. He enjoyed renovating old cars and spent most of his time in his private woodlands.

He could lay his hand to anything.

He was a partner, father and grandad.

The funeral service conducted by Philip Norris will be held on Monday, October 22, at East Lancashire Crematoriu­m, Radcliffe.

FRANK MILLS

MR Frank Kenneth Mills, of Smithy Brow Court, Haslingden, died at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on Tuesday, October 9, aged 83.

After leaving Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Blackburn, he went to work at Grane Manufactur­ing Company in Haslingden.

Ken also worked at William Birtwistle’s in Blackburn and Hall and Butterwort­h, Waterfoot, and eventually retired at the age of 70 from work at Burberry.

Ken was one of the last people to complete National Service before call-up ended in December 1960.

Ken was a beloved husband of Mary, father to Tim, John and fatherin-law to Kate and grandfathe­r to Jack and George.

He enjoyed camping and later caravannin­g and walking the dog. He loved nothing more than taking grandsons Jack and George on holiday.

The funeral service was due to be held on Thursday, October 18 at 2.20pm, at Accrington Crematoriu­m, officiated by David Ireland.

BARBARA WRIGHT

BARBARA Wright, of Haslingden Old Road, Rawtenstal­l, died on Saturday, September 22, while on holiday in Turkey.

She was a retired home economics teacher at Fearns High School.

As an avid traveller and supporter of Wigan Rugby League, following them to Sydney last year, Barbara enjoyed many outings with the ladies groups she was associated with and her beloved rescue Labradors.

Barbara leaves sister Sheila, sister-in-law Barbara, brothers-in-law Guy and Roy, nephews Matthew and Alistair, nieces Lucy, Emma and Amy and great-nieces and nephews Noe, Elanor, Orla, Ebba, Ben Maddie, Ruby and William.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, October 29, with service and cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 11am, officiated by David Ireland.

GEMMA NUTTALL

GEMMA Leigh Nuttall, of Holden Wood Drive, Haslingden, passed away on Sunday, October 14, surrounded by her loving family and friends at Pendleside Hospice, aged 29.

She attended Haslingden High School and then worked in the George department at Asda, Rawtenstal­l, before training to be a dental nurse at Ramsbottom Dental Care. She later worked as a manager at the family-run business Funtazia, in Blackburn.

Gemma enjoyed horse riding, music, dancing, keep fit and running. She was a part of the Police Cadets in her younger years and as a teenager was a groom for rider Ben Hobday. She was also a former Rossendale Harrier.

Gemma leaves daughter Penelope, mum Helen, stepdad Graeme, dad David and brother Andrew, and was a much loved relative and friend to many.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at 2.20pm, at Accrington Crematoriu­m, officiated by David Ireland. Family flowers only please, donations may be made to The Gemma Rose Foundation. Please can everyone coming to celebrate Gemma’s life wear something pink or blue.

KATHLEEN BROUGHAM

MRS Kathleen Brougham, of Helmshore, died peacefully in her sleep, aged 88, at Haslingden Hall Care Home on Saturday, September 15.

Kathleen moved from Manchester to Helmshore with her husband Alf in 1957.

She was the daughter of Ulysse and Marrian Walkden, the wife of the late Alf, the mother of Stephen and Paul, the sister of Ian and the late Barbara and the grandmothe­r of Joe, Annie and Julianna. She was also much loved by sister-inlaw Barbara, daughtersi­n-law Joanne and Tracey and all her nephews and nieces.

She was well known in the area as an outgoing and friendly person and had many friends and work colleagues from her various jobs throughout her life including being warden of Raven Park Sheltered Accommodat­ion in the 1970s.

Her funeral was held at the Parish Church of St Peter, Laneside, Haslingden on Friday, September 28 and was well attended by family and friends. Thank you to all who were able to attend and for the donations made to Kathleen’s chosen charities.

She will be greatly missed by all.
