ROSSENDALE RAMBLERS

ON Wednesday, October 10, an excellent turnout of 21 ramblers enjoyed an unseasonably warm 11-mile walk from Hurst Green in Lancashire, taking in Longridge Fell and the rivers Hodder, Ribble and Calder.

A very unusual feature of the day was something of a plague of harlequin ladybirds, apparently a breed from Asia and North America that travel across to Europe on mild autumn winds.

This was followed on Sunday, October 14, by a lovely autumnal walk from Whalley, again in Lancashire.

The seven walkers on this 10-miler had lovely views of the splendid Whalley railway viaduct, with its 48 arches.

Another interesting aspect was a visit to a ‘camping’ church, where one can visit and camp inside overnight – a new concept to me.

Coming up, on Sunday, October 21, we have our monthly shorter Sunday walk, this time being a 5.5-mile walk from Turton Tower, near Bolton.

These shorter walks are over by lunchtime, and are an excellent way to spend Sunday morning in a very sociable and pleasant way, so do please join us.

Then on Wednesday, October 24, there is a 10-mile walk from Dimple, also near Bolton, which should be gently scenic.

Finally, on Friday, October 26, you can join us on our final linear walk of the year, this time from Skipton to Gargrave.

These walks give a much broader view of an area than a circular walk, and this particular area is scenically superb.

Further details about our upcoming walks can be found in the ‘latest news’ area of our website at www. rossendale-ramblers. co.uk, or you can contact us via secretary Glyn on 01706 561042, or at glynbr45@gmail.com.
