Mixed feelings after Cup defeat

-

SHELDAN KEAY BACUP Borough manager Brent Peters was left with mixed emotions following his side’s 3-2 home defeat to Avro in the Macron Challenge Cup.

Peters was relatively pleased with his side’s attempts to come back into the game after going 3-0 down, but was still frustrated by the initial performance that has seen the club knocked out of the competition.

“Despite a disappointing defeat I must credit my lads for their character as they did show an attempt to rescue the game from 3-0 down,” he said.

“From my point of view I am extremely disappointed with every goal we conceded. The penalty was really harsh as no way was my defender’s arm in a position it should not have been in. The referee did us no favours whatsoever in that decision, not that I would want any favours but it really was an extremely harsh decision.

“For the Avro second goal, credit to their goalscorer as their lad showed a hunger and desire to aggressively get in to force the ball into the net, this despite the fact there were three of my players around the one Avro player. Had those players have shown that same

Continued from back desire to clear the ball as the Avro player did to score, we would still be in this competition.

“The same could be said for their third goal. Our goalkeeper should have done better with the initial effort but I have to question why my defender who was on hand to clear was away with the fairies whilst their striker reacted brightly to finish.

“Following these setbacks I was pleased with what I did see. I was really impressed with not only Micha Evans’ contribution when he came on but his overall attitude.

“I was happy with our two debutants as well. Alessandro Ruocco had a bright mind and awareness when scoring from their goalkeeper’s misfortune. He showed what myself and my coach believe, that he is a goal predator.

“I was also pleased with the contribution and quality finish from Alexander Nicholas, and I am sure both players will prove to be valuable additions to an already talented squad.

“Sadly in the earlier parts of this game our talent did not shine like we know it can, but I suppose you have to give credit to Avro who ensured by what ever means they were never going to give us that chance to play. However some of our players have got to be prepared for more games like this and the physicality. I do not have a problem with it, but it seems some of my players do. Man up I say, after all football is a physical game.”
