Scarecrows on charity trail

-

A VILLAGE’S revived Halloween tradition - a Scarecrow Trail - has proved a huge success with many weird and wonderful creations.

At least 65 entries all over Helmshore took part in the fundraising trail, visited by hundreds of people and raising more than £1,000 for charity.

Organiser Sue Clarke, who suggested the traditional event should be brought back this year, said: “We have had hundreds of people down and we were overwhelmed with how it went.

“We haven’t done it for about ten years and there has been a really good response and we have had local businesses contributing prizes for the winners.”

Entries paid £2.50 per house and more than 400 trail maps were sold at Neary’s store with all proceeds from the event going to SafeSpace Rossendale, a charity for local homeless young people.

The event has proved in such high demand that many entrants have agreed to display their scarecrows until this weekend so that more people can come and enjoy the trail.

Among those to enjoy the trail were Harry and Alice O’Conner.
