Visit to battlefields for sports college students
PUPILS from Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads, were among just six selected schools at a prestigious London commemoration.
Ben Tudor and Brandon Mayor, both 15, were fortunate to be selected to take part in a tour of the First World War battlefields in March.
It was part of the commemorations of the Battle of Manchester Hill and on their return they scripted and narrated a video on their experiences.
As a result, they were invited to attend the National Legacy 110 Awards on November 7 in recognition of their ‘exceptional, innovative and engaging’ First World War post-tour project.
A further trip is being made this week by Fearns pupils Kalumn Ridgway and Dale Lord along with teacher Mrs Ashworth. They are on a fourday First World War Cen- tenary Battlefields Wilfred Owen Tour when they will visit Essex Farm Cemetery where John McCrae wrote ‘In Flan- ders Fields’ and attend a ceremony of the Last Post at Menin Gate. They will also attend the Somme and Thiepval Memorial.
A Remembrance service will be held in the school’s Arts Theatre on Friday, November 9 at 2.15pm. All are welcome.
