NEIGHBOURS have expressed their shock and sadness after a murder inquiry was launched following the discovery of a 48-year-old woman’s body at a house.

Pauline Jackson was found dead at an address on Rudd Street in Haslingden on Sunday afternoon, December 9.

A man had been arrested on suspicion of murder, but police said he has been released under investigation.

A post-mortem examination took place on Tuesday, December 11 but police said the cause of death is as yet ‘unascer- tained’. Residents on Rudd Street expressed their shock at the tragic events and floral tributes have been left on the doorstep and outside window ledge of the house.

Sophie Coulter, 31, who lives on the street, said: “I heard a young woman has died and so there are a lot of police and ambulances about.

“It’s so tragic that this has happened here.”

Neighbour Shah Munim, 35, who has lived with his family on Rudd Street for five years, said the street was usually a ‘pretty quiet’ one.

He said: “The upstairs and downstairs windows at that house had been boarded up for a few weeks, but I don’t know what happened. To be honest I was surprised someone was still living there.

“There were many police cars and ambulances all through the day.

“When I took my children to school on Monday the police were still outside and one of them told me there had been a major incident.

“It’s very sad to hear someone so young has died.”

The house is boarded up at the front but people living nearby said that this has been the case since before last weekend.

Another male neighbour, 20, who preferred not to be named said: “It’s so terrible something like this has happened.

“When I came home at 11.30pm on Sunday there was a CSI van and four or five other police cars on the street.

“I knew her by sight but we rarely spoke.”

Others took to social media to pay their respects. Anthony Judson said: “RIP to the lady, condolences to her family and friends.”

Pat Capstick said: “My thoughts are with your family and friends.”

Lancashire Police said they were called to the scene by the ambulance service at around 3pm on Sunday after Ms Jackson’s body was found.
