MP throws his weight behind plan
●● Graham Jones with Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham HASLINGDEN’S MP has thrown his support behind a bid to restore Rossendale’s rail link.
Graham Jones MP has written to Andy Burnham, Mayor of Manchester, to ask for his support in including the Rawtenstall to Manchester rail corridor in Transport for the North’s 2020-2050 strategy, which would see major investment in transport infrastructure.
It follows the release of the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) report into the rail corridor, as commissioned by Rossendale and Lancashire County Councils, as we reported on earlier in the month.
Mr Jones highlighted the poor rail connectivity that is experienced by many in the area.
He said: “I have long campaigned for enhanced transport connectivity in the north, as improved transport links are central to seeing the north thrive, from its economy to its job market. However, it is vital that we see our towns and rural areas included in this investment. The Department for Transport must listen to the north. Both Lancashire and Rossendale Councils on behalf of local people are calling for infrastructure investment to boost the local economy.”
