Exhibitors flock to Holcombe Old English Gamefowl Show

THE 174th show was held on New Year’s Day, by kind permission of the Royal British Legion, at their Club in Central Street, Ramsbottom.

Seventeen exhibitors showed 71 birds, with visitors travelling from as far as Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshi­re, Cheshire, Kent and Co Cavan Eire, as well as many parts of Lancashire and Greater Manchester including Astley, Macclesfie­ld, Haslingden, Rishton, Hoghton, Tottington, Helmshore, Darwen, Ramsbottom, Edenfield, Greenmount and Bury.

The judge was Mr Phil Pennington.

The results were as follows: COCK Class for the Oxford Centenary Cup (male bird over 12 months old).

1st Mr Michael Durkin, Hoghton

2nd Mr Hugh McDermott, Openshaw

3rd Mr Todd Fletcher, Chesterfie­ld.

HEN Class for the Sam Jackson Cup (female bird over 12 months old).

1st Mr Todd Fletcher, Chesterfie­ld

2nd Mr Frank Decastro, Lincoln 3rd Mr Todd Fletcher, Chesterfie­ld.

STAG Class for the Millie Whittaker Rose bowl (male bird under 12 months old).

3rd Mr Michael Durkin, Hoghton.

Pullet Class for the Harold Haworth Cup (female bird under 12 months old).

3rd Mr Frank Decastro, Lincoln.

LOCAL Class for the Tom Randle Haworth Trophy (Male or female bird any age bred within 15 miles of the show). 1st Mr Josh Bellard, Rishton

2nd Mr Colin F Haworth, Haslingden

3rd Miss Sophia Taylor, Bury.

THE Mary Shaw Cup for the best bird in show was won by Mr Michael Durkin, Hoghton with the winner of the Cock class.

This was a really good show with the judge commenting on the high proportion of good quality entries.

Visitor numbers were somewhat down on last year but we look forward to a return to more normal numbers next year to support a tradition which has been upheld since at least 1843. Thanks are again due to ARMAC Vets of Bury, whose support allowed the show to be held in accordance with the conditions of the DEFRA licence.
