Ex­hibitors flock to Hol­combe Old English Game­fowl Show

THE 174th show was held on New Year’s Day, by kind per­mis­sion of the Royal Bri­tish Le­gion, at their Club in Cen­tral Street, Rams­bot­tom.

Seven­teen ex­hibitors showed 71 birds, with vis­i­tors trav­el­ling from as far as York­shire, Der­byshire, Lin­colnshire, Cheshire, Kent and Co Ca­van Eire, as well as many parts of Lan­cashire and Greater Manch­ester in­clud­ing Ast­ley, Mac­cles­field, Hasling­den, Rish­ton, Hoghton, Tot­ting­ton, Helmshore, Dar­wen, Rams­bot­tom, Eden­field, Green­mount and Bury.

The judge was Mr Phil Pen­ning­ton.

The re­sults were as fol­lows: COCK Class for the Ox­ford Cen­te­nary Cup (male bird over 12 months old).

1st Mr Michael Durkin, Hoghton

2nd Mr Hugh Mc­Der­mott, Open­shaw

3rd Mr Todd Fletcher, Ch­ester­field.

HEN Class for the Sam Jack­son Cup (fe­male bird over 12 months old).

STAG Class for the Mil­lie Whit­taker Rose bowl (male bird un­der 12 months old).

Pul­let Class for the Harold Ha­worth Cup (fe­male bird un­der 12 months old).

LO­CAL Class for the Tom Ran­dle Ha­worth Tro­phy (Male or fe­male bird any age bred within 15 miles of the show). 1st Mr Josh Bel­lard, Rish­ton

2nd Mr Colin F Ha­worth, Hasling­den

3rd Miss Sophia Tay­lor, Bury.

THE Mary Shaw Cup for the best bird in show was won by Mr Michael Durkin, Hoghton with the win­ner of the Cock class.

This was a re­ally good show with the judge com­ment­ing on the high pro­por­tion of good qual­ity en­tries.

Vis­i­tor num­bers were some­what down on last year but we look for­ward to a re­turn to more nor­mal num­bers next year to sup­port a tra­di­tion which has been up­held since at least 1843. Thanks are again due to ARMAC Vets of Bury, whose sup­port al­lowed the show to be held in ac­cor­dance with the con­di­tions of the DEFRA li­cence.
