A helping hand from a four-legged friend for Civic Pride volunteers

-

CIVIC PRIDE

HAPPY New Year!

Civic Pride are constantly recruiting new volunteers and consequently we keep a range of hi-vis vests and jackets available in a range of sizes.

But when Colin joined we had to rethink our strategy!

Colin is a border collie, a rescue dog who won’t let his owner Mike out of his sight and is a regular addition to the Thursday morning team sessions.

On a more serious note there has been a spate of thefts of Civic Pride hanging baskets in Rawtenstall.

These are expensive units which are stocked twice yearly for the benefit of the community.

Stealing from a charity must rate a long way down the scale of acceptable actions.

If anyone has information please email info@civic-pride.org.uk.

On a more positive note, if anyone was in Rawtenstall or near Hareholme Bridge on Christmas Day and saw a flash of a hi-vis jacket we can confirm that you’ve not gone crackers, two of our volunteers collected five bags of litter between them!

Fortunately there was plenty left for the 14 volunteers who turned up on Friday, December 28, collecting 45 bags between them.

RAMSBOTTOM RECORDED MUSIC SOCIETY

AT the first meeting of the New Year, member Elizabeth Holiday presented ‘ Yet another anniversary’.

Based on the Naxos 30 CD collection from 2017 to mark the label’s 30th anniversary, the set is arranged alphabetically, mainly by composer, and Elizabeth worked systematically from B to V playing pieces by 15 different composers.

To begin, Jeno Jando played the 3rd movement from Beethoven’s ‘Pathetique‘ Piano Sonata.

This recording from 1987 was the first cooperation between Naxos and Jando, who still records for them.

From JS Bach we heard Menuet and Badinerie from his Suite No 2 in B minor for flute, strings and basso continuo, which featured attractive flute playing by Tony Heywood.

Moving to a recording from 2015, we heard the young cellist Gabriel Schwabe, accompanied by Nicholas Rimmer on piano play an excerpt from a Brahms cello sonata.

A change of mood was provided by the Saturday Night Waltz from Copland’s Rodeo, and this was followed by the atmospheric prelude La cathedral engloutie by Debussy which had been orchestrated and arranged by Peter Breiner.

An extract from a Dvorak piano trio was followed by Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 4 after which we heard Solveig’s Song from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No 2.

A lively rendition of Réjouissance from Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks brought us to the interval.

The familiar Rondeau: Allegro from Mozart’s Flute Concerto No2, was followed by a little known Nordic piece for violin, Abendstimmung by Sinding.

Rosina’s aria Cavatina: ‘Una voce poco fa’ from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, provided a vocal interlude.

This was from a disc which received widespread critical acclaim.

Elizabeth then played two violin showpieces by Sarasate and Tchaikovsky before looking forward to the end of Winter with the first movement of Spring from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

In extending the vote of thanks, chairman Roger Howarth said that everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the varied and tuneful selection that Elizabeth had presented.

The next meeting of the Society is on Thursday, January, 17.

ROSSENDALE RAMBLERS

A NEW walking year for Rossendale Ramblers began on Sunday, January 6 with a seven-mile misty walk around Haslingden Grane, followed by an excellent lunch at the Sykeside Country House Hotel.

We had 22 people on the walk, and 25 sat down for lunch, getting the year off to a great start.

At this time of year we tend to stay local, so our walk for Wednesday, January 16 will not go far afield.

It is likely to start from Summerseat, but our website will have all the details about a week before the walk.

Please join us to enjoy the local scenery and footpaths.

As you know, our shorter walk programmes were very popular in 2018, so this year we have doubled the number of six-mile Sunday walks from ten to 20.

These walks are all relatively local, and finish by 2pm at the latest, leaving the rest of the day free for shopping or the family.

Similarly, we have almost doubled the number of our two-hour pub walks from eight to 15. As last year, most of these pub walks are on Thursday evenings, but we have added some early and late ones on Saturday mornings, the first of which is on Saturday, February 16.

Please do join us for these easy, local, and very sociable walks – you can even bring your kids and your dog, so long as they are all well behaved!
