Group still raising cup of kindness after six decades

-

AFUNDRAISING committee that has raised more than half a million pounds for Cancer Research UK celebrated its Diamond Anniversary with an afternoon tea - and duly raised some more!

The Bacup Local Committee began fundraising for the national charity in September 1958.

Since then it has used the funds raised locally to buy specific equipment used by researchers at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre as well as funding many scientists so that they can carry out their life saving research.

Committee members,

family and friends celebrated the group’s achievement at an afternoon tea at Sykeside Country House Hotel in Haslingden on June 8.

Sixty-five supporters attended and found out more about the local work from the local committee chairperson Shirley Adams and were thanked by Sarah Peach, who is regional manager at Cancer Research UK.

Female vocalist Francesca Dennison entertained and the event raised a total of £635.60. The amount was boosted by donations from local companies including Roland’s Florist, Kandy Corner, Anna’s Cafe Bar, Tesco Haslingden Community Champion and The Beauty Room, Stacksteads.

Shirley said: “What needs to be remembered is that for the past 60 years volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure that all the events put on run well and are successful in raising money.

“The fact that the committee has been going for 60 years is, in itself, a major tribute to the hardworking volunteers.

“Individuals volunteer for many different reasons, but I am sure we all share the sense of satisfaction when an event goes well and we have raised much needed funds for Cancer Research UK and to think we have played our part in helping to beat cancer.”

Money raised by The Bacup Local Committee will fund research to beat cancer, helping to ensure more men, women and children in Bacup and across the UK survive.

Polly Leetch, Cancer Research UK’s North West fundraising manager, said: “The Bacup Local Committee have made a huge contribution to Cancer Research UK’s work over the past 60 years and we are incredibly grateful for their support.” ●● Local fundraising manager Polly Leetch with the Bacup Local Committee for CRUK celebrating their 60 years of fundraising.
