Bacup clash hit by Covid cases

- STEVE BROWN

‘Covid is not going away anytime soon and this latest incident proves my point’

BACUP Borough boss Brent Peters believes an outbreak of Covid-19 cases among this weekend’s scheduled opponents Garstang reinforces his belief the league programme should be put hold during the pandemic.

The North West Counties Football League kicks off tomorrow but not for Bacup. Earlier this week, Peters received an email from the league’s fixtures officer confirming the club’s opening game against Garstang FC would be postponed due to several of the opposition’s players contracting coronavirus.

“I have made no secret of my feelings towards starting the new season,” said Peters. “I have said on numerous occasions on The Sports Bar Show over the past six months that in my opinion it is totally bonkers to even consider kicking off in this current situation. Covid is not going away anytime soon, and this latest incident involving our opponents Garstang FC proves my point. We could see ourselves in the same mess as we were last season, not being able to fulfil the fixtures.

“Nobody wants another null and void situation. Thousands of pounds spent and nothing to show for it, but that’s exactly what we could be faced with.”

The news comes after Borough have enjoyed a positive pre-season. Games against stiff opposition means that Peters men are ready for a fresh challenge of the 2020/21 campaign.

And with the majority of the squad returning from last season there’s definitely a greater level of expectation this time around.

A number of new acquisitions have been added to the squad.

The arrival of Toby Wright up front has given Peters another dimension in the final third.

And with Aidan Hussey, Jacob Godsman-Pilling and Daniel Fati showing good signs through the middle, it’s looking promising for the young Borough.

Borough’s first game will now take place on Tuesday 6th October at home to AFC Blackpool. Kick Off 8pm
