Jake outlines vision for town’s £1m ‘renaissance’
VALLEY MP Jake Berry has set out a vision for Bacup to become the new Hebden Bridge, following its £1.085m Historic England heritage grant.
Mr Berry says the cash injection, first announced more than a year ago, is helping to bring about a “renaissance” of the town’s high street.
The town was a key part of the Weavers’ Triangle during the 19th century and the funding will go towards repurposing old buildings and preserving its Victorian high street.
Mr Berry told the Free Press that he has high hopes for the town.
“My vision for Bacup is for it to become a Hebden Bridge-style shopping experience which will receive visitors from across Yorkshire and
Lancashire,” he said
“What we are seeing in Bacup is a renaissance of a high street dominated by small, well run, independent businesses.
“With this money we will continue to see a renaissance in Bacup’s fortunes.
“We want to protect our heritage. There are around 120 listed buildings in Bacup, it’s absolutely vital that we use this to preserve our history.”
Historic England have described Bacup as “distinctive” and one of “England’s best preserved mill towns.”
But the public body admits it is in desperate need of regeneration and claim that the £1 million funding boost will see to do just that.
A Historic England spokesperson said: “Bacup’s retail offer has suffered over recent years as consumer patterns changed, and it has lost its vibrancy, with many shops becoming vacant and buildings generally underused.
“There is a real need to re-invigorate the town’s identity by bringing together residents and visitors alike.”
