Fan-tastic Boro

- STEVE BROWN

BACUP Borough have booked their place in the first round of this season’s FA Vase competition after coming through a tough encounter on penalties against Stockport Town.

With a good crowd inside the Brian Boys Stadium, Brent Peters’ team were able to put on a quality display with a brilliant array of passing and determination.

Michael Gervin gave Borough the lead from the spot just before half time and Stockport were reduced to ten men.

But in the second half Stockport dug deep and produced some quality football of their own. And on 72 minutes they equalised, Matthew Grimshaw meeting a free-kick to head past Harry Turner.

Both sides continued to show their quality on the ball and in the latter stages Stockport could have stolen the victory had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from the Borough number one.

With the game going to penalties it was the Borough keeper who took all the plaudits on a sunny afternoon at West View.

Two great saves and a completion of Borough penalties was enough to see the team through into the next round and an away trip to Barnton FC on the 31st October.

Borough also enjoyed a happy start to their North West Counties League campaign with a comfortable 6-2 win over Chadderton on Tuesday night. A hat-trick of penalties from the captain, Michael Gervin, two from Toby Wright and one from Alex Mellor was more than enough to kick start the new season.

“The lads have really impressed me, their attitude has been first class,” said manager Brent Peters.

“Not just those playing, but the entire squad have gelled together in such a short space of time and that is showing in our displays.

“The support has been amazing. On Saturday especially against Stockport the lads had to dig deep for that win and the encouragement coming from the crowd was tremendous. Whatever people may say, that encouragement feeds through to the players. They buzz of that support, long may it continue.”

This weekend Borough take the trip to Golcar United for league action. Kick off 3pm.
