Rail legend to steam onto heritage line
THE Flying Scotsman is to haul special tours on the East Lancs Railway next year.
Once voted the best- known train in the world, it will be on display on the heritage line, which runs from Heywood, through Bury to Rawtenstall, over the Easter weekend.
The locomotive was due to make a number of visits to the East
Lancs this year, but the events were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It’s now due to visit from Good Friday April 2, to Tuesday, April 6.
In a statement the ELR, which faced a fight for survival when covid struck, said: “Once again, we are hosting the most iconic steam locomotive, with the return of The Flying Scotsman.
“This celebrated locomotive will be the star attraction in an Easter weekend to celebrate steam’s golden age.
“Ticketholders for these special services will also be able to make unlimited journeys on the standard timetabled trains on the day of their visit.”
Tickets start at £ 19.60 for adults and £ 12.40 and are on sale via the official website.
Famous for becoming the very first engine to reach 100mph in 1934, the Flying Scotsman was saved for the nation in 2004 after a widespread fundraising campaign involving public donations and the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
