Schools shut down as snow sweeps in
SCHOOLS across the Valley had to fully close on Friday due to adverse weather conditions.
Northern Primary School, Weir; St Anne’s CE Primary, Waterfoot; St Joseph’s RC Primary, Stacksteads; Waterfoot Primary and St Paul’s CE Primary, Rawtenstall, were among nine schools across the county to confirm they would not open, following a return of snow and ice.
A message on the Northern Primary Facebook page on Friday morning read: “Text from school: Unfortunately, due to site safety, school will be closed today. Remote learning will continue and please check Teams.”
Schools may be closed to most pupils due to the pandemic, but are still remaining open to the children of key workers and vulnerable pupils.
There was also disruption on the roads on Friday morning. Grane Road was impassable due to snow, and side roads were treacherous.
A spokesperson for Rossendale Police said on Friday: “The Eastern parts of the county are suffering with significant snowfall this morning particularly over high ground. Council gritters are busy on significant routes but side roads remain untreated in many locations. Please drive with caution and remember you should only be making essential journeys due to pandemic restrictions.”
