Gas team called out as leak spreads to homes

-

RESIDENTS narrowly avoided being evacuated after gas was found to be leaking into six homes in Edenfield.

Gas network Cadent said they found a leak on an old metallic gas main running under Gincroft Lane on Thursday, January 14. It came after residents reported the smell of gas.

One neighbour, 64, who wished to remain anonymous said some residents left their homes anyway as a precaution, but one elderly gentleman preferred to stay in with his dog.

A residents group newly set up in response to the incident and several other issues with the road, said it was the second leak in recent months - after gas engineers spent two days digging up the lane to fix a leak near the cricket ground.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “Our engineers found that this gas was getting into six nearby properties.

“The volume wasn’t at levels that required evacuation, but it was clearly something we needed to monitor continuously and fix fast. We completed the repair on Friday (January 15).”
