PM ‘sorry’ as Covid deaths hit 100,000

THE latest countywide increase in new coronaviru­s cases was the lowest recorded in a single day since the start of the third period of lockdown earlier this month.

Eleven areas recorded fewer than 50 positive tests, including Rossendale with a rise of 35 to 5,288 cases overall.

However, a grim milestone of deaths was reached with the Government saying a further 1,631 deaths within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, brought the UK total to 100,162.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was ‘deeply sorry’.

Government data up to January 25 shows of the 7,325,773 jabs given in the UK so far, 6,853,327 were first doses - a rise of 279,757 on the previous day’s figures.
