Part of roof falls from former bank building

-

A TOWN centre road was closed after part of a former bank building’s roof collapsed.

Police and Lancashire County Council’s highways officers attended the corner of Market Street and Bankside Lane in Bacup, where part of a chimney appeared to have caved in.

The incident at the former NatWest bank is understood to have happened during the early hours of Thursday, January 28.

A road closure was put in place for several days between Lord Street and Bankside Lane as emergency services and building control dealt with the incident. No injuries were reported, although a van parked on the road suffered damage.

Rossendale council’s building control officer attended the scene the same day.

Speaking the day after, a spokesperson told the Free Press: “One of our building control officers has been onsite again this morning. Scaffolding has been erected and works are underway to remove the remaining section of unsafe chimney.

“This work will be completed over the weekend to ensure the building is safe. The road closure will remain in place until all danger has been removed and we will revisit site early next week to confirm the building is safe.”
