Shameful failure to support vulnerable
IN another newspaper last week, Ramsbottom MP James Daly took offence at suggestions he had supported a cut to Universal Credit – which is due to drop by £20 a week from the end of March as a pandemic additional payment comes to an end.
This comes from the fact that Labour, in parliament, tabled a vote to ask for the additional payments to continue.
Mr Daly is keen to stress he didn’t vote against the proposal put forward by Labour.
But equally, like Rossendale’s Jake Berry and Haslingden’s Sara Britcliffe, Mr Daly didn’t vote in favour of it.
He abstained.
Essentially, telling residents relying on that extra £20 a week that he didn’t want to put his name against a call for them to keep it.
He added: “Together with members of the Northern Research Group of Conservative MPs I support the retention of the temporary £20 increase in UC and will continue to lobby ministers on this as part of the pre-Budget Consultation.”
So why not vote to support the area’s most vulnerable residents when he had the chance?
A shameful state of affairs.
