Youngsters on track for spell of activity
AHIGH school’s sporting challenge in January was so successful it is being carried forward and in February students are being asked to ‘spell out’ the school.
The first challenge of 21 set by the PE department at Haslingden High School was for students to complete 21k in the month, many rose to the challenge and walked, ran and cycled the distance and more.
PE teachers Erika Wilson and Nikki Berko have put their thinking caps on to set Active Alphabet, a new challenge for February to keep the students fit and active whether they are in school because they are vulnerable or the child of a key worker or home schooling.
Erika said: “Nikki and I have been bouncing a few crazy ideas around today as we started to think about the next challenges that we are going to issue during this lockdown three.
“We have come up with is this: we are asking students to create a letter a day using their fitness tracker as they either run or walk during February.
“Each day of the month will be allocated a letter.
“On February 1 we want students to make the letter H then February 2 will be letter A and so on.
“By the end of the month they will have spelt out H-A-S-L-I-N-G-D-EN-H-I-G-H-S-C-H-O-O-LP-E-2-0-2-1 and still have two days to spare at the end to maybe create a picture? Or have a rest.”
The screenshots of the tracker spelling out the letters will then be used, with pictures of the students being active, to make a display at school and posted on the school’s social media accounts.
The January challenge prompted parent Lindsay
Harris, whose child is a GCSE student, to write to the teachers. She said: “About 28 years after I’ve left school, there’s finally been some PE teachers that have inspired me to do exercise.”
