Student Oliver saddles up to get a taste of weekend work
SCHOOLS may be virtual for most students, but that doesn’t mean that work experience has stopped at Whitworth Community High School.
This year, students were offered the opportunity to take part in work experience weekends by writing a letter to the Headteacher Gill Middlemas who then selected six students for the placements, which have been funded by the school.
Keen mountain biker Oliver Jones was one of the lucky ones to be selected and in March he will be going onto a Young Engineer Programme.
Oliver, 14, from Whitworth, said: “I am really into mountain biking and competing and I am interested in mechanical, design and civil engineering.
“My best subjects at school are science, technology and geography and they are the basis for an engineering career.
“My dream job would be to become a mountain bike design engineer.”
The packed weekend, paid for by the high school, will see him learning about engineers from a variety of different disciplines and also having a question and answer session with a leading engineer.
He will take part in mapping a mission to Mars, learn about robot programming, prosthetic limbs and electric vehicles.
Oliver will also be given advice and tips on his CV and applying for university placements
Budding film director Hannah Goggins, 15, can’t wait for her weekend as a Young Film Maker and she will be joined on the virtual experience by Payton Walker and Jess Jones.
Hannah said: “Last year I did get to do some work experience at my primary school and this time it will be a different opportunity because it will be online.
“I chose film making because that interests me most and everything on the course seemed good for my future plans.
“I will get to meet producers and directors and also make a short film and come up with ideas and then bring those ideas to life.
“I am really excited about it and I think it is a really good opportunity.”
Chloe Carrol will also be undertaking the Young Vet weekend while Eleanor Higgins is on a Young Lawyer weekend.
