Valley MP issues call for the region’s green revolution to go with a bang

ROSSENDALE’S MP has co-authored a report calling for a ‘Northern Big Bang’ of investment to make the region the home of a ‘Green Industrial Revolution’.

The report acknowledg­es that millions of northern voters in red-wall seats voted Conservati­ve for the first time at the 2019 general election. It states: “They were voting not just to secure Brexit, but because they were tired of being neglected and ignored.

“They were tired of living in a country in which attention and investment are channelled towards the South East, while the North has gone from being an industrial powerhouse to one of the least productive areas in Europe.”

In the paper published by the right-wing think tank Centre for Policy Studies, Jake Berry and co-author Nick King call for the government to be “radical”, making recommenda­tions including updating creating a new Initial Investment Incentive to help spur a Green Industrial Revolution, making major planning decisions in weeks not years, and creating a new Growth Board for the North. They add: “Margaret Thatcher’s ‘Big Bang’ in October 1986 took the City of London from a regionally significan­t financial centre to a global powerhouse and spread prosperity across the South East of England. We need a new Northern Big Bang that puts the North at the heart of the post-pandemic recovery – by making it an irresistib­ly attractive destinatio­n for investment.” Mr Berry chairs the Northern Research Group of Conservati­ve MPs.

Bird Dog

Start in a box position with your knees and hands at hip – and shoulder – width apart. Inhale as you lift opposite arm to opposite leg, creating a long straight line from fingertip to toe. Exhale and engage e your core as you bring your hand in to touch your knee.

Do all of the repetition­s on the same side before switching. If you’re struggling with pelvic girdle e pain or keeping your balance, keep your foot oot on the ground and slide it along the he mat instead.

Side plank twist

Lay on your side with your forearm flat on the floor, bottom elbow lined up under the shoulder, both legs bent, with feet together, and then lift your hips off the floor. Raise your other arm and then bring it down and twist it under your body. If you notice any doming in your core, make sure you’re bending both knees, and exhaling to engage your core as you twist gently.

Repeat on the other side.
