“The days of people only quitting alcohol because they have a serious problem with it are long gone,” says William Porter, author of Alcohol Explained.

“Increasing numbers of people are quitting for the huge improvemen­t it makes to their health and quality of life,” he says.

“You don’t need alcohol to relax and unwind.

“The pleasure for daily drinkers is no more than the relieving of withdrawal caused by previous drinks.

“Alcohol is a sedative, so your brain becomes hypersensi­tive to counter this.

“When the alcohol wears off, this over sensitisat­ion remains, leaving you anxious.”
