ROSSENDALE RAMBLERS

-

WE know that we need the rain to fill our reservoirs, but why does it have to bucket down on Wednesdays like it did on Wednesday, October 20?

On this day, 20 determined ramblers turned out to enjoy and endure a lovely 11-mile autumnal walk from Abbey Village, taking in Rake Brook and Roddlesworth reservoirs, Sunnyhurst Woods, and Darwen’s Jubilee Tower.

The tower was not really visible in the low cloud, which was just as well, as it is currently shrouded for muchneeded renovation work.

Happily, on Sunday, October 24, there was only a little rain, so 14 walkers had a lovely sixmile walk in the delightful Healey Dell area of Rochdale, including the so-called Fairy Chapel in the gorge of the River Spodden.

Although the walk itself was enjoyable, the sight of the derelict Turner & Newall asbestos factory, coupled with what we now know about the effects of asbestos dust inhalation, gave us pause for thought.

Coming up, on Wednesday, November 3,

we offer a 10-mile walk from the pretty Yorkshire village of Gargrave, which will take in the possibly medieval St Helens Well at Eshton, as well as the lovely surrounding countryside.

Finally, a look ahead to Saturday, November 6, when you are invited to join us on a two-hour morning walk from Waterfoot, which will include the recently reopened railway tunnels.

After the walk, those

who wish can enjoy a bite of lunch in the Old Library Café.

These walks are free, but after three walks with us we ask you to join The Ramblers, at a cost of only £3.05 per month.
