Inquest opens on victim of hit-and run

-

A MAN was tragically killed by a ‘speeding’ hit-and-run driver after leaving a Chinese takeaway, an inquest heard.

Gavin Andrews was crossing the road on foot after leaving the shop when he was struck by a vehicle ‘travelling at excessive speed.’

The 34-year-old, who lived in Tottington, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

An inquest into the death of Mr Andrews was opened at Rochdale Coroner’s Court this week and heard how the vehicle involving in the incident on Walmersley Road in Bury failed to stop at the scene.

Senior police coroner’s officer Paul Lever said an investigation to trace the driver of the vehicle is ongoing.

Coroner Catherine McKenna adjourned the hearing and set a review date of March 28 of next year. A full inquest date will then be set pending the outcome of Greater Manchester Police’s investigation.
