PPE ingenuity wins award for homecare employees

-

A HOMECARE provider sought out a plastic bag manufacturer and got them to switch to creating plastic aprons to protect the clients they cared for and their staff members.

During the pandemic Hazelwood Homecare sourced alternatives when PPE was in short supply.

The firm scooped the Medium Business award trophy at Rossendale Business Awards, where a packed audience in Whitworth heard of their efforts to keep residents safe.

Hazelwood, which has now formed an alliance with Lifestyle by Homecare Services, initially started as a residential home in Haslingden in 1985 by Pat Mahgoub.

When visitors said they were not ready to relocate into a care home but needed some assistance in their own houses, Pat recognised there was a need for community care.

She set up teams of carers who would assist people in their own homes; thus the homecare service was born.

Registered manager Jill Allen is aunt of former director Sara Hughes, who has now decided to pursue other interests, and sister of Hazelwood’s founder Pat.

She said: “We have grown from a small business at the Kingfisher Centre in Rawtenstall to now being based in the former bank in Crawshawbooth. We have 48 clients, all adults, with a variety of needs, not just elderly but also people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and mental health issues.”

Based in Waterfoot, Lifestyle by Homecare Services was founded in 1991 and is run by Ryan and Ann Godwin. It now operates extensively throughout Lancashire, Bury and Trafford.

Ryan said: “This is an alliance of two strong companies with great reputations in the care business. What is important is we will be maintaining the owner’s legacy and we will continue to provide first-class care to enable individuals to remain living in their own homes.”
