Church group works to strengthen community

-

THIS week, we are looking at the work of The St Thomas’ Musbury Mothers Union (MU).

Based at St Thomas’ church in Helmshore, it meets every second Tuesday and is part of the global Mothers Union founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner.

The MU is an international Christian charity whose vision is a world where everyone prospers. They actively pursue this vision through prayer and action, helping to build confident people and resilient communities. Their movement seeks to bring about justice, challenge prejudice and advocate change,

and seeks to support families worldwide.

Its members are not all mothers or even women, as there are many parents, men, widows, singles and grandparents involved in its work. Its main aim is to support monogamous marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity.

St Thomas’ MU meets monthly for a short religious service, followed by a visiting speaker or some other activity of general interest.

St Thomas’ MU are heavily involved in community activities such as preparing and delivering personal wash bags for patients at the Royal Blackburn hospital, and the production and delivery of knitting blankets that are supplied to the Premature Babies Unit.

The MU also raises significant and muchneeded funds for various MU charities both at home and abroad, supporting

families at Baptism and sending cards on each subsequent anniversary and providing financial support to the Blackburn Diocesan caravan on the Lancashire coast, which provides a holiday opportunity for families in need.

The St Thomas’ Musbury MU have a full range of events, talks and activities.

Recently, members of St Thomas’ Mothers Union made a stand. They joined together at the Millennium Stone on Broadway to raise awareness of the one in three women worldwide who are subjected to domestic or sexual abuse.
