Charity team’s £18,000 gift
A VALLEY charity committee is celebrating more fundraising success in its 63rd year supporting Cancer Research UK.
The Bacup Fundraising Committee began fundraising for Cancer Research UK in 1958.
And they have raised more than £576,500 over this time by holding local events such as quizzes, store collections, dinners along with Christmas and Easter fairs.
Liz Hall, press secretary of the committee, said: “I would like to thank the generosity of the people in
Bacup; they’ve always been very supportive of the work that we do and are the main reason that we have been so successful in raising this amazing sum.”
The group recently held a very successful collection at Morrisons which raised £495, followed by a fantastic Christmas Fair at Central Methodist Church, Bacup which amassed an incredible £1,521.
While at the Christmas Fair, the group presented Vikki from Cancer Research UK with a cheque for £18,000 which they raised in support of Professor Catharine
West’s research group, which is testing patients’ genes to help GPs and patients decide which treatment options are best for them.
Vikki Bassek, Cancer Research UK fundraising spokesperson, said: “The Bacup committee has made a huge contribution to Cancer Research UK’s work over the past 63 years and we are incredibly grateful for the part they have played in the fight against cancer.
“Our determination to beat the disease hasn’t faltered and we are more focused than ever on our ambition of seeing three in four people survive their cancer by 2034.
“However, our progress relies on the incredible dedication and commitment of volunteers and supporters like the Bacup Committee - without whom we would not be able to fund our life-saving work.
“One in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime. All of us can support the research that will beat it.”
