WALKING down to Rawtenstall on New Year’s morning you could not miss all the yellow jackets all around the town heading for Kay Street.

There were some 17 Civic Pride volunteers who had got out of bed early to clean up the town.

A new recruit Ethan, aged four, and his mum and dad, also joined in with great enthusiasm.

Around 50 bags of rubbish were collected in just an hour and a half.

They included some unusual items including parts of a knitting machine, a very elegant shoe, a mop, lots of cans, bottles and cigarette butts and some takeaway packaging.

Other litter pickers have also been busy over the festive season helping to help keep our area free from litter.

One volunteer, Keith, has been particularly busy last year, and collected 205 bags which will have made an incredible difference.

Sue Shuttleworth, chair of Civic Pride, said: “Once again, a huge thanks to all the volunteers today, and all of our lone rangers for your amazing contribution to keeping the local towns as clear of rubbish as we can.”

Not only does litter look unpleasant by removing rubbish from our environment, especially items which contain plastic, it is helping the Rewilding

Rossendale project to improve the biodiversity in the area.
