Harriers make the most of dry Blackpool track

- ATHLETICS STEVE DUXBURY

ASMALL contingent of Harriers made the trip to Blackpool on Saturday to run in the fourth of the six Mid Lancs Cross country League’s fixtures and they were rewarded by a sunny day with flat and dry ground underfoot; quite a contrast from the rain and mud at the Lancashire Championships the Saturday before.

Alice Carr and Holly Nicholls finished in fourth and 12th positions respectively, similar to their Lancashire results but probably against tougher opposition on this occasion.

Arthur Grenfell was 34th out of 42 runners in the U11 boy’s race and in the U13s races Matilda Duffy finished in an excellent seventh place from 27 runners, Ruby Cleaver placed 16th and finished strongly but would have benefitted from a hillier course and Toby Steel ran for the boys.

Joanne Cleaver and Sophie Howard battled all the way round the 6K and three lap course at Lawson’s Fields with Joanne crossing the line in 42nd place from 130 finishers after 28mins 39secs and Sophie finishing just 16 seconds and seven places later.

Sarah Steel also ran and finished in 108th place.

The senior men turned out in force for their four lap 10K race and were rewarded by second placed team and, although streets ahead of third placed Wesham, they were well beaten by a very strong Lancaster University team.

However there were excellent runs from Stephen Corbishley in ninth place from 211 finishers after 34mins 37secs, Ben Kirkman in tenth and third male under 20 just 14 seconds later and Jon Cleaver 11th and first male veteran after 34mins 56secs.

Andrew Grenfell was next home in 24th place followed by Sean Greenwood 44th and Chris Snell completed the team in 57th spot.

Sadly Matty Harris had to pull out with an injury after looking comfortable running with the leaders for three of the four laps but hopefully he’ll be back for the Northern Championships at the end of the month.

Mathew Clawson also ran finishing in 74th place and Ian Duffy was 134th.
