McGovern keeps cool to snatch late win
A TOUCHLINE conversion from Liam McGovern in the final seconds of time added on snatched a well deserved win for Rossendale at Marl Pits last Saturday.
With the pitch not really conducive to open flowing rugby the opening half was a torrid affair with the home side opening the scoring with a penalty from McGovern after York had been penalised for not releasing the ball in the tackle.
York continued to infringe and a second penalty for not rolling away at the break down afforded McGovern the opportunity to extend his side’s lead to 6-0.
York came into contention with a penalty from William Hessay but with the visitors once again penalsied for not releasing in the tackle McGovern tagged on a third for 9-3 at the interval.
York had much the better of the opening phases of the second half with tries from Sam Elliott and Joe Simpson affording a 9-15 advantage to the Yorkshire outfit.
Rossendale continued to battle away but with strong defence from York few openings were available until in the dying minutes of time added on and from intense pressure from the Rossendale pack enough space was fashioned for back row Rob Willetts standing out on the wing to go over in the corner. For 14-15 McGovern’s conversion sealing the win.
Although Rossendale remain in tenth place they still have games in hand over the sides immediately above and have also opened up an eleven point gap over Sandal in eleventh.
This coming Saturday Rossendale are away to Wirral always a hard fought fixture.
