Silence still word on partygate

-

AT the time of writing, the prime minister was facing a police investigation in the conduct of his office during lockdown, with at least 15 parties either in Downing Street or Whitehall reported.

Yet again, there has been precious little from either of our local MPs – Jake Berry or Sara Britcliffe.

Certainly in the case of Mr Berry, his most recent update on Twitter is sharing a debate about pies with a journalist from before Christmas. On Facebook, he’s been busy telling us he’s out and about canvassing, but not talking about literally the thing everyone is talking about.

Indeed, pretty much every post on Facebook has

comments from people not talking about what Mr Berry wants to talk about, but about the party fiasco. On a post with Conservative activists in Waterfoot, someone asked not about the canvassing, but where the suitcase of wine was – a reference to how alcohol got into Number 10 during one lockdown party.

Mr Berry has been quoted in the media saying Mr Johnson has been a good leader and ‘still gets it right’ (apart from when it comes to remembering parties, it seems). But in terms of talking directly to his constituents, very little.

It’s a similar story for Ms Britcliffe too, who has found time to post on Facebook to encourage us to enter local shops into the British Kebab Awards, but on the fact that thousands in Lancashire were fined for lockdown breaches while those responsible for the rules were holding parties in London.

At least some Tory MPs are urging constituents to wait until the results of the formal inquiry. We’re not even getting that – silence, it would appear, is golden.
