Gallery unveils its latest line-up of winter events
THE Whitaker museum and art gallery has announced a series of events in February, including two new contemporary art exhibitions.
On Thursday, February 10, The Whitaker will host a launch event for two new art exhibitions; Ruth Murray’s Everything is Green and Harry Grundy’s Edge Collection.
As well as the chance to get a sneak peek of the work and hear from the artists, there will also be free wine and soft drinks.
Edge Collection is West Yorkshire-based artist Harry Grundy’s first solo show.
Bringing together nine works of sculpture, photography and drawing, Edge Collection ‘explores the brutal and complex human relationship with this phenomenal world.’
Meanwhile, Ruth Murray’s Everything is Green is named after a David Foster Wallace short story – a story of loss and selfdeception, of standing at the kitchen window, contemplating the view.
These paintings of women, mostly in domestic interiors, are saturated by coloured light and have an additional resonance during the pandemic, a time when we’ve all spent longer contemplating the physical contours of home.
Also taking place in February is a film night featuring Hitchcock thriller, After Love, a free heritage tour of the museum, an evening of storytelling from Dr Oliver Bishop and a yoga morning.
On Thursday, February 17, The Whitaker will host an evening on The Life and Poetry of Samuel Bamford.
Born in Middleton, Lancashire in 1788, Samuel Bamford was a weaver, poet and political reformer.
His life traversed the pre and post-industrial eras in Northern England, and the two autobiographies he published in his lifetime provide a vivid and tangible insight into life during this volatile period in British history.
Actor Neil Bell – who portrayed Sam in the 2018 Mike Leigh film Peterloo – will be reading from these works as well as reading a selection of Bamford’s poetry, with Samuel’s wife played by Jennifer Reid.
There is also a series of events planned for all the family including ‘Make Your Own Museum with Professor Jigget,’ the early years studio every Wednesday, a family film afternoon featuring Labyrinth. ●●FOR more information and to book visit: www. thewhitaker.org/
