People to have a say on vision for town’s future

- STUART PIKE stuart.pike@menmedia.co.uk @stuartpike78

ROSSENDALE council is asking the public for final feedback on proposals in the Haslingden 2040 Vision and Masterplan.

The council announced in summer 2021 they had successfully secured £1.8m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) and would be making a further £200,000 contribution from the council.

The five-year project will focus on Upper Deardengate and will be a major step in the delivery of the Haslingden 2040 Vision & Masterplan. Planned works include: ● A pedestrianised area at the northern end of Deardengate to create an event space for community

activities.

● A vibrant town square with restaurants/cafes and outdoor seating, secure parking for bicycles and landscape features.

● Substantial investment in key heritage sites within Haslingden town centre.

The council will also be offering grants to 19 priority buildings on Upper

Deardengate to undertake building repair works, restore historical and architectural features and improve the sustainability of the buildings.

The designs have been shaped by the results of the Haslingden 2040 public consultation throughout 2020.

Creating spaces for families and communities to come together in the town is a key feature of the Vision for Haslingden and is a focal point of the National Lottery Heritage Fund Bid.

Coun Adrian Lythgoe, chair of the Haslingden Strategic Board, said: “Investment in Haslingden is part of a wider programme of work at the council to improve town centres in Rossendale. This exciting project will revitalise Haslingden town centre for residents, with new open spaces that will enable people to come together to enjoy events and bring new life into the town.

“We are planning an exciting range of community engagement activities and training opportunities, and a community micro grants fund will be available for local groups and organisations to bid in to.”

The public realm proposals have been based on the information gathered through these consultations.

The council is now asking for further feedback to these proposals to see if any adjustments are needed to the plans.

Sara Britcliffe, MP for Haslingden and member of the Haslingden Strategic Board, said: “A successful Haslingden town centre is important to me and would be beneficial for all residents and businesses in and around the town. Involvement from residents and business owners is vital and I’d encourage people to take part and complete the survey. I am pleased that Haslingden is now getting the investment and planned future it desperately needs as part of the Government’s promise to level up every part of the UK.”

The survey is available online at https://bit.ly/ Haslingden2040. There will also be a stall on Upper Deardengate on Monday, February 14, from 9.30am to 12.30pm where people can come and give feedback, or you can email your comments to haslingden2040@rossendalebc.gov.uk.

Images and a display of some of the proposed changes can been seen at the library, First Choice Credit Union and Haslingden Community Link. The plans can also be seen at haslingden2040. co.uk/.
