New golf club president hopes for bumper season
THE new President of Rossendale Golf Club for 2022 is Barbara Askew.
After two difficult years due to Covid-19, Barbara is now looking ahead to a great season for the MDLGA members.
The Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association is one of the largest organisations of its kind in the country and has ladies from over 80 clubs within a 25-mile radius of Manchester Town Hall.
They are able to enjoy competitions across the area in season and their top competition is the Bell Cup which is an Inter Club Knock Out featuring the top seven ladies from the club featuring in the competition.
Barbara outlined her time in golf: “I started playing golf when knee injuries put a stop to me
playing hockey and tennis. I joined Rossendale GC in 2005 and was invited onto their committee after a couple of years and was responsible for the introduction of Try Golf, an initiative to recruit new lady members. In the five years I did this, it was very successful. In 2015 I became Lady Captain, and following that, Handicap Secretary. I would class myself as an average golfer, and have won three Board prizes at Rossendale and I am a regular member on the Rossendale Handicap Team playing in the Shields matches.
“On the MDLGA, after three years as a committee member, I was asked to take on the role of Bunty Booth Secretary, which I did for three years, only relinquishing the job when invited by the Past Presidents to be President for 2022.
“I am flattered and thrilled to be asked. I would like to thank all MDLGA committee members since I have been on the committee. It is a really lovely organisation, and everybody works hard to deliver great competitions, and a positive golfing experience for all MDLGA clubs. I must also thank the ladies at Rossendale for all their support and friendship.
“The last couple of years have been challenging for several reasons, most notably Covid and of course the introduction of the WHS (World Handicap System). So, I am hoping for a much more settled season for everybody, with good golf, good health, and good weather.
“I am delighted that Rossendale will host the Bell Cup final, of which Walmersley Golf Club are the defending champions, and any player wishing to enter our other competitions can check them out on our website.”
