JUST WHAT WAS THE POINT?
WE have now got the finished extremely expensive space on Kay Street (‘Town is spaced
out by £300,000 square revamp,’ March 25) - am I the only person who feels underwhelmed to say the least?
Apparently this space will bring more people to the town thus benefiting local businesses.
Yes, I can see it now, people coming from far and wide for an unrivalled view of the bus station on one side and the National Westminster Bank flanked by betting shops on the other. The cavernous bus station which boasts one small refreshment kiosk and two large empty spaces, one on each side.
Mind you it is actually quite difficult to get into
Rawtenstall, after negotiating the potholed roads in all directions and faced with traffic backed up along Bank Street and Kay Street, stuck at the interminable traffic lights opposite Asda, not to mention the difficulty trying to find a parking space.
Once in, negotiating Bank Street is hazardous in the extreme with pedestrians having to keep a close eye on where they put their feet for fear of breaking a limb on the uneven cobbles and wobbly flags! Take my advice ladies leave your stilettos at home and don your flattest, stoutest footwear if you don’t
want to risk a trip to A and E.
I applaud the wonderful job that Civic Pride do creating their spectacular displays around the town presumably the additional beds in the new space will be something else for them to maintain but did we really require more? I suppose we should be grateful that at present the pathways are at least level but what was the point of diminishing the only suitable space in the town to host any sizeable gathering?
