AGIANT walking puppet will stroll around Bacup as part of a two-day fun family festival on June 2 and 3 - and there are plans to make it an annual event.

Coinciding with the school half-term break, all daytime events at the ‘This Here Festival’ will be free for parents and children.

Greensclough Councillor Barbara Ashworth, Rossendale council’s portfolio holder for health and well-being, said: “The festival will be a new event for the Bacup calendar.

“But we are hoping that it will become an historic one because it is intended that this event will be the first of many.

“The aim is to unite people all ages to enjoy two fun days out in the town and for families it will offer them the chance to participate in new activities and experiences.”

A carnival atmosphere in the town is promised on Thursday, June 2, with the Baybeat Streetband loudly parading round.

The musicians of all ages, will be heard before they are seen.

In the afternoon, a show for Dinosaur-loving five to 10-year-olds will be staged at the ABD Centre, on Burnley Road on Thursday.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaagh Dinosaurs, which has featured on BBC’s ‘Rhyme Rocket’, will be presented by Dommy B.

The audience will follow the adventures of a young female troll who has to defend her town from a gang of destructive and deadly dinosaurs.

On Thursday evening, Bacup Waffle will feature spoken word by Dommy B and music from Mary Joanna and the Star.

This is a paid-for event, with tickets at £5.

Coun Ashworth said: “Friday will see the arrival of Out of the Deep Blue and Eko – a giant 4m tall interactive puppet that will be walking around Bacup and gathering a crowd to watch a show on Irwell Terrace.

“The activities will be new to the town and will provide families with free daytime entertainment.

“We want to create a lasting legacy in the town and to build on the festival’s success year-onyear.

“We have selected the dinosaur theme as it ties in nicely with this year’s Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival theme and we hope people will also support that event which will be held on Sunday, June 26.”
