ATUITION centre is running a summer school for the first time at its second location to help children with their school work.

Progress Education Centre in Haslingden will be is doing a summer school to provide pupils with extra support with maths, English and science during the six-week school summer holiday.

Students can also take part in more practical activities such as origami, using weights and measurements, and building a skeleton.

Founder of Progress Education Centre, Denise Darwin, who is a teacher based at the Haslingden centre, said: “We help a lot of children, not just with their homework, but also their confidence.

“We have time to go back and fill in gaps in learning and tailor our delivery to the child’s needs.

“We find that the summer holiday is a long time for children to be off school and so the skills they picked up get forgotten.

“The summer school helps keep the skill level going over that six-week period.

“We are thrilled that a couple of boys passed their entry exams to be accepted into Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar school after spending time at the centre.

“They said that the tuition really helped them.”

Denise’s experience teaching children with behavioural challenges inspired her to set up the education centre.

The former English, maths and art teacher says she set out to teach children what they needed to know and cut out the irrelevant information to make sure they receive a thorough and focused education.

The Haslingden Centre in Deardengate opened in October 2020 following the success of the Darwen Centre, which opened in 2017, with many tutors working between the sites.

Following the success of the summer school at the Darwen centre, staff are bringing it to the Haslingden Centre to allow pupils in the area to benefit.

The Darwen centre had to close during the pandemic which staff say had a ‘devastating impact’ on the business.

However, Denise made the brave decision to open a second centre in Haslingden to answer parents plea for help.

They wanted to provide parents and school children in Haslingden with the same support and resources as people in Darwen.

Staff offer tutoring in English, maths and science for children from reception age to GCSE and A-levels.

They work with students to develop an individual learning plan, constantly reviewing progress and achievement.

The team also sponsor Oswaldtwistle Juniors every year.

The Haslingden centre has more than 20 students joining them but staff hope to increase the number of pupils to 120 students, like the Darwen centre.

The centre can take eight children per session, which has to be prebooked and the amount of days the sessions will run depends on the amount of children booked in.

Staff at Progress Education Centre are Ofsted

registered and members of the Association of Professional Tutors.

The team is keen to collaborate with schools.
