WHAT you’ve been saying on our Facebook page:

●●A KEEN snooker player and walker died at his home surrounded by his family after being exposed to asbestos during his working life.

Derek Shenton had worked as a painter and decorator for what was then called Rawtenstall Corporation and later for Lancashire County Council from 1964 to

1997 when he retired. Last September Derek, who was born in Rossendale, underwent a biopsy which revealed he had malignant mesothelioma.

(See page 4).

Brooke Steel Estates:

RIP how very sad.

Sharron Hodgson: Very sad. Horrific disease, my dad passed away from this just before Christmas.

Andrea Gray: Thinking of you all and sending love

Shb Birt Huxley: Such sad news my goes out to his family

●●RAWTENSTALL has been named as one of the best places to live in the UK. The Sunday Times has published its 2023 list of the Best Places to Live with the Lancashire town being hailed as an “improving town” that has a “buzzing” weekend culture.

Towns were judge based on schools, transport, broadband speeds, culture and access to green spaces and the health of the high street. (March 31).

Callám Hartley:

Shocked with the amount of negativity. I remember 10 years ago when

Rawtenstall was quite an embarrassment.

As soon as jobs, money, tourists and other benefits start to make something we can be proud of the valley scrooges come out from underneath the woodwork.

Linda Mcdonald: Happy memories of spending summer holidays there as a kid. Great place.

Joy McCarthy: Well I have lived in London and lots of other places too. Rossendale is by far the place I prefer. It’s the people.

Jackie Barlow: Not surprising. With most of the money being spent on Rawtenstall. The rest of us don’t get a look in

Jean Hardman:

Obviously weren’t here at peak traffic hours when the whole valley is clogged up with stationary cars and road works

Breandán Mac Giolla Phádraig: Brilliant town to live in , lovely people, great family live there, very friendly people, great place to raise a family.

Anne Morris: A brilliant town

Katie Marsh: That will be people’s rent going up.

Callum Andrew Jameson Brown: Meanwhile poor old Haslingden sinks ever further into oblivion.

Jeanette Shuttler: Obviously not judged on the pot holes then?

Brooke Steel Estates: Great news!

Hayley Chambers Personal Estate Agent: I absolutely love it here.

●●SALLIE Smith, of St Mary’s Place, Rawtenstall, passed away on March 23, at home aged 82 years. Sallie lived in a farm cottage on Edgeside in

Rossendale with her parents. She worked at Tomlinsons for six months, then school dinners at Fearns for two-and-a-half-years, later returning to J H Hirsts for 18 years before being made redundant. (March 31).

Hayley Harding:

RIP Sallie. Lovely lady, always a smile

Kim Whittaker: RIP Sallie. Such a lovely lady and a long time friend with my Mum. She will be sorely missed

Carol Louise Cryer: Aww R.I.P Sallie. Lovely woman

Jennifer Irving: Rest in peace Sallie xxx
