ROSSENDALE RAMBLERS

-

WE don’t often have three gloriously sunny walks in a week, but this week broke the mould.

The first, on Wednesday, May 17, was quite a tough but gloriously scenic 11 mile walk to Hardcastle Crags from Heptonstall, a lovely village with a very interesting churchyard.

The 18 ramblers saw the grave of the 18th century criminal David Hartley, one of the Cragg Vale coiners, who clipped and counterfeited coins, almost ruining the economy.

A drama about this will be shown on BBC2 on Wednesday, May 31.

Then on the following evening 17 walkers and a dog enjoyed a balmy two hour walk from a Holcombe Brook pub through the MoD firing range on Holcombe Moor, spotting the old Krypton Factor assault course en-route.

It was really nice to be able to sit outside the pub for a lengthy social afterwards.

Finally, on Sunday,

May 21, 11 ramblers enjoyed a fairly easy nine-mile amble in the rolling countryside around Great Harwood, passing a mysterious tin man sculpture en-route.

Coming up, on Sunday, May 28 we have a six mile walk from the village of Higham that will include a ‘hidden valley’ and Churn Clough Reservoir.

The walk will finish by around 1.30pm, leaving the rest of the day free, so why not come and join us?

Our next walk is a nine mile – totally flat - one from Overton, near Lancaster.

This walk will take us to Sunderland Point, unique in the UK as being the only community to be on the mainland and yet dependent upon tidal access.

Finally we have another two hour very sociable pub walk on the following evening, this time from a pub in Bury.

So if we don’t see you on the Higham walk, please join us on this one.

Our walks are free, but after three walks with us we ask you to join

The Ramblers, at a cost of only £3.21 per month.
