Band open season with double date
A BAND emerged from their winter hibernation earlier this month to provide entertainment at two events staged to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.
Water Village Band joined residents on May 7 on a warm and sunny afternoon for the Lumb and Water Coronation Street Party, which was held in the grounds of Lumb Baptist Church.
The band also provided entertainment on Bank Holiday Monday at Trinity Baptist Church in Bacup.
Cornet player and Trustee of the band, Elaine Roberts, said: “The event at Lumb was attended by around 200 local residents and was a credit to the church members for organising it.
“The band played a full programme during the afternoon, including a stirring National Anthem after the minister, Steve Ansell, had proposed the traditional Lancashire version of the Loyal Toast to ‘His Majesty The King, Duke of Lancaster.’
“The Bacup event was equally well organised and the band members thoroughly enjoyed playing to such an enthusiastic audience.”
Water Village Band is currently enjoying an increase in playing members following the problems of Covid-19 lockdowns. Conductor and Musical Director, Michael Rourke, said: “A number of experienced players have joined Water in the past year and our Beginners’ and Improvers’ Band has more than doubled in membership.
“Several of the beginners took part in the two Coronation events, which gave them a taste of playing in a full band, and they thoroughly enjoyed it.
“Both events were perfect for Water’s role as
a community brass band and we’re looking forward to more performances through the summer and autumn.
“We still welcome new players, experienced or
beginner, and any age from eight upwards.”
Main Practice sessions for Water Village Band are on Wednesday evenings from 6.45pm with beginners’ and
improvers’ sessions held on Saturday mornings from 10am, both at The Bandroom on Burnley Road East in Lumb.
