ROSSENDALE PROBUS
INTO what has become a seemingly ubiquitous and endless season of cloud and rain in Rossendale came the vibrant colours, classic landscapes , statuary, pagodas and shrines of traditional Japanese culture when Cliff Booker presented “Travels in Japan“, together with wife Sue, at our meeting at Ashday
Lea on Wednesday 10th April (see below).
Their excellent photography had been skilfully edited over many hours into a flowing illustration of their recent visit to the principle cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto accompanied by grandchildren, whose iphone expertise with maps and Google translate was to prove invaluable.
The huge importance of water and unique offset bridges in providing opportunities for reflection in both a physical and spiritual sense was everywhere in evidence. It was also demonstrated that the well known Japanese propensity for polite bowing even extended to the free roaming deer in Nara when accepting a proffered titbit! As a prominent member of the East Lancs AGS, the undoubted highlight to Cliff was their visit to the Osaka Expo90 Commemorative Park and its enormous glasshouse enclosing an aray of orchids and other exotic plants. This had been the first public showing of this presentation and augurs well for future recipients, as witnessed by the enthusiastic response of our members to it. The spectacular Fushimi Temple, Kyoto is shown as an example seen.
At our next meeting, at 10am for 10.30am on Wednesday 24th April , Chris Freeman presents “From Golden Sands to Cotton Castles “, to which, as always, newcomers are welcome.
