The International College of Beirut will enter a girls’ team in the Rosslyn Park Sevens in March. The first school to introduce a girls’ rugby team in Lebanon have seen interest grow from four girls in 2015-16 to nearly 20 now, while other schools in the country have followed suit.
The team’s head coach Nichole Swink says: “I knew the girls at IC possessed the potential to make up a good team; I just needed the bodies to help them realise that potential. It is a sport that promotes equality, teaches resilience and empowers its participants.”
Player Lea Bdeir says: “I’ve been on so many different teams inside and outside of IC, but I have never felt as happy and proud to belong to a team than I have in rugby. The sport itself is new and challenging, different from the typical sports. We help each other improve and cheer each other even if we fail.”
