“Test rugby is back but these are testing times”

THERE IS a plethora of top-quality rugby events on the horizon, but the picture off the field is rather more grim.

Covid restrictions had already put a huge financial strain on clubs and unions, and just when there was reason to be more positive, with the prospect of crowds – albeit smaller than usual – returning, the doors slammed shut again.

In England, spectators may not be allowed in stadiums until March, denying the RFU crucial ticket revenue from their autumn Tests as well as the 2021 Six Nations. Premiership clubs could end up losing a year’s worth of gate receipts. The stark reality is that some clubs will not survive without external support.

There are also ramifications for the community game. Grass-roots clubs are limited in how they can generate money themselves and the financial struggles of the national unions mean investment at community level will be hit too.

The rugby community must stay tighter than ever. Stay safe and enjoy the issue.
