Disappointed Jensen points to ‘individual mistakes’ as Bees concede five

MATHIAS Jensen has blamed ‘big mistakes’ for Brentford’s heaviest ever Premier League defeat against Newcastle United on Saturday, writes George Bennett.

The Bees succumbed to a 5-1 demolition at St James’ Park as the Magpies bounced into the top six following back-to-back wins.

Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring with an unerring header into the bottom corner before David Raya presented Newcastle with a golden opportunity to score a second. His misplaced pass found Callum Wilson, who broke into the box to square for Jacob Murphy to double their advantage.

Despite Ivan Toney’s secondhalf penalty, Brentford’s individual errors became a constant theme throughout as Newcastle ruthlessly exploited them with a suffocating high press.

Aaron Hickey was pickpocketed by Guimaraes to bag his brace with a superb low shot from range. Ethan Pinnock’s undercooked back pass was intercepted by an eager Miguel Almiron to round Raya and roll the ball into the net for his third goal in two games. Pinnock compounded a miserable afternoon by deflecting Joelinton’s cross into his own net and Jensen believes Brentford handed Newcastle the victory.

“I’m very, very disappointed,” Jensen told brentfordfc.com.

“We should never, ever let in five goals, no matter who we play, where we play and how bad the performance is.

“It’s a lot of individual mistakes that led to the goals, but we can’t concede five goals in the same game. It was tough, but we made it much tougher by making big mistakes.

“There was actually a lot of space to pass the ball. I think we gave them the win.”

The defeat on Tyneside means Brentford have gone three games without a league win, having drawn one and lost two.

Bees boss Thomas Frank admitted he never expected to concede five goals in the Premier League but is confident that his side can bounce back.

“Last year, I never thought that we would lose five games on the bounce – it happened last year. I also thought that we would never concede five goals,” Frank told the media.

“I know both things happen in the Premier League, the most difficult and the most relentless league in the world. It’s just because my belief in these boys is so big. That’s why I never thought it would happen.

“It happened. It’s about how we handle setbacks, how we bounce back, so it’s all about that and I’m convinced we’ll bounce back. Not even a doubt, not at all.”
