NIGHTMARE FUEL

THE DEVIL’S HOUR from Friday, October 28, Amazon Prime

■ THERE are sinister goings on in this six-part series from executive producer Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Sherlock). Jessica Raine stars as Lucy, who has a stressful job, a troubled son and a mother with dementia, and on top of that she wakes from a terrifying nightmare every night at 3.33am, the ‘Devil’s Hour’. Is she somehow the focus of all the bad things that are happening around her and can Peter Capaldi’s unsettling Gideon provide any answers? Gripping stuff.

CREEP SHOW

GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S CABINET OF CURIOSITIES Netflix

■ OSCAR-winning film-maker Guillermo del Toro (The Shape Of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth) brings us eight spooky tales in time for Halloween. The stories come from a team of writers assembled by Del Toro and are designed to push the boundaries of the horror genre – while scaring the bejesus out of us. Among those starring in these creepy yarns are Geena Davis, Andrew Lincoln, Essie Davis, Crispin Glover and Rupert Grint.

HORRORS OF WAR

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT Netflix from Friday, October 28

■ REAL-life horrors are to the fore as Erich Maria Remarque’s brilliant anti-war novel is adapted into a harrowing film. Felix Kammerer plays Paul Bäumer, a German teenager who signs up to be a soldier with patriotic fervour but soon comes to know the horrors and trauma of conflict as he is pitched into the carnage of the First World War. Increasingly distressed and disillusioned, Paul has to keep on fighting and trying to survive as the prospect of an armistice finally looms. More than 100 years on, Remarque’s story retains its powerful impact and the film provides an interesting companion piece to Sam Mendes’ 1917.

SPECIAL FORCES

SAS ROGUE HEROES BBC1, Sunday, October 30, 9pm

■ BASED on Ben Macintyre’s acclaimed book, this six-part series has been adapted for television by Stephen Knight (Peaky Blinders) and looks at the creation of the renowned British Special Air Services unit IN North Africa between 1941 and 1945. We follow the unit from inception to its early operations behind enemy lines in Greece, Italy, France and Germany, looking at how the SAS helped Europe free itself of the tyranny of Nazism. An impressive cast includes Alfie Allen, Jack O’Connell and Dominic West.

BIRTHDAY BEEB

THE LOVE BOX IN YOUR LIVING ROOM BBC Two,

Thursday, October 27, 9pm and on iPlayer

■ HARRY Enfield and Paul Whitehouse RAID the BBC archives for this hilarious look at 100 years of the Beeb – but don’t expect an array of clips of the great and the good of broadcasting from down the years. This is a creative and irreverent use of the source material that gives us a history that’s not afraid to be critical or offbeat as the duo PUT together an Adam Curtis-style MONTAGE that’s as much parody as celebration – rather like their show about 50 years of BBC Two, Harry & Paul’s Story OF The Twos, eight years ago.
