Choreographed on-screen violence has become a signature of award-winning South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook.

There are flashes of brutality in this police thriller, but greater damage is inflicted on characters’ psyches as the writerdirector puts his spin on an erotically charged game of cat and mouse.

Insomniac and workaholic Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) prowls the city’s streets with hot-tempered colleague Soo-wan (Go Kyung-pyo), much to the annoyance of his wife Jung-an (Lee Junghyun), who complains bitterly that they have a “weekend marriage”.

Proving her point, he fixates on the case of a rock climber (Yoo Seung-mok), who tumbled to his death, but Hae-joon becomes obsessed by the climber’s wife Seo-rae.
