MIRACLE CHILD THE WONDER Netflix, streaming now
■ FLORENCE Pugh takes the lead role in this film based on the acclaimed book by Emma Donoghue. Set in rural Ireland in 1862, Pugh plays Lib Wright, an English nurse sent to a small village to help determine how 11-year-old Anna O’Donnell (Kila Lord Cassidy) is alive after fasting for months and find out if something else is going on other than the ‘miracle’ that many think it is. Tom Burke, Toby Jones and Ciarán Hands co-star in this handsome period drama.
MOB HANDED TULSA KING Paramount+, streaming now
■ SYLVESTER Stallone is on good form in this series about Dwight Manfredi, a mobster who’s stayed loyal to his New York bosses during a long jail sentence but on his release is disappointed to be sent to sent out to the sticks in Oklahoma to set up a new operation. Nevertheless, he gathers a crew and sets about establishing his presence with a string of criminal enterprises that soon gain him notoriety. Stallone makes the most of a meaty role and the show isn’t shy of revisiting some well-trodden gangster storylines in a very entertaining way.
NORDIC NOIR BLACK SANDS Alibi, streaming now
■ AS the nights draw in, it’s time for a slice of Nordic Noir with this atmospheric crime drama which unfolds over eight episodes. New police detective Anita (Aldís Amah Hamilton) heads out of Reykjavik to look into the death of a tourist on the country’s famous black sands. It turns out her first case is in fact a hunt for a serial killer who has been covering up his or her crimes for years, making the murders look like accidents. Complicating matters is the fact that the focus of her investigation is her home town which is full of familiar faces.
FESTIVE SPIRIT SPIRITED AppleTV+, from Friday, November 18
■ FEELING Christmassy yet? This new take on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol might just get you in the festive spirit in the lead-up to the big day. In this musical comedy Will Ferrell plays the Ghost Of Christmas Presents who each year selects a Scrooge- type character to redeem on Christmas Eve. But he may have bitten off more than he can chew this time round with Ryan Reynolds’ ruthless marketing consultant turning the tables on him. Expect some lively exchanges between the two leading men.
DOOMED VOYAGE 1899 Netflix, from Thursday
■ FROM the makers of supernatural thriller Dark comes another another intriguing mystery this time set at the tail-end of the 19th century. A ship with a diverse selection of European migrants aboard sets sail for the New World, its passengers full of hopes and dreams about new lives on the other side of the Atlantic. But on the crossing they pick up a signal from a ship that had embarked on a similar voyage months earlier and seemingly disappeared without a trace. As the crew investigates, it seems many on board have secrets they’re keeping hidden and something sinister is lying in wait.
